The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula silhouetted against the glowing red emission nebula IC 434 in the constellation Orion, just south of Alnitak (Zeta Orionis), the easternmost star in Orion's Belt. Part of the vast Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, it sits at a distance of roughly 1,300-1,500 light-years, with the dense dust column forming the âheadâ shape spanning only a few light-years. IC 434 itself is ionized by radiation from nearby hot stars, producing the strong Hα glow that makes the horse-shaped silhouette visible. This is a classic narrowband target: Hα brings out the background nebula's red emission dramatically, while the dark horsehead shape and neighboring Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) near Alnitak make this one of the most recognizable and frequently imaged regions in the sky.
